Charlton Lido latest: Summer opening, Swim Doctor, cafe… and caps

Charlton Lido - May 2019

With the sun making increasingly regular appearances and a bank holiday weekend hoving in to view, we thought we’d take a quick look at the latest news from Charlton Lido:

You can start your long weekend with a Friday afternoon swim as they extend pool opening hours until 4pm today (though note they’re closing early at 4pm on Monday):

Summer opening hours for the pool start on Tuesday 28th May and will be:

  • Weekdays: 6.30am – 8pm
  • Weekends: 9am – 5pm

(Easier to remember than previous summers, though many will wish that they’d stay open until the evening on warm weekends).

The cafe has now re-opened:

And – at last! – they have some merchandise to sell. Charlton Lido & Lifestyle Club branded swim caps come in four colours and are for sale at the reception for £5 each:

The lido’s Swim Doctor sessions – drop-in swimming classes for adults, included in lido membership fees or £3 on top of the cost of a swim – are now running 6 times a week:

  • Monday 7–8pm
  • Tuesday 9.30–10.30am and 12.30–1.30pm
  • Thursday 1–2pm.
  • Friday 7–8.30am (fitness) and 9.30–10.30 am (technique)

This writer highly recommends these classes as a way to improve your swimming as part of a supportive group of swimmers of varying experience and ability, without having to commit to regular attendance.

Inexplicably, there’s no mention of the Swim Doctor sessions on the official lido website, and you can’t book them online (as far as we can see – if anyone’s worked out how to do this, let us know!). We recommend following Tracy Swim Doctor or Friends of Charlton Lido on Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

Here’s to a happy summer of lido swimming!

Charlton Lido: Spring swimming opening hours announced

Charlton Lido heated open air pool
Charlton Lido has announced its pool opening hours for Spring 2019, which come into effect today.

The pool is now open 7 days a week, having been closed on Wednesdays and Thursday through the winter. The new opening times are:

  • Mondays – 06.30-14.00 / 16.00-20.00
  • Tuesdays – 06.30-14.00 / 16.00-20.00
  • Wednesdays – 06.30-14.00
  • Thursdays – 06.30-14.00
  • Fridays – 06.30-14.00
  • Weekends – 09.00-17.00

The announcement was made via Instagram and Twitter posts and, at the time of writing, the new times were not reflected in the centre’s online timetable. The latter has not shown accurate opening times for much of this year (you’ll struggle, for example, to find any info on the excellent Swim Doctor sessions which run several times a week).

The Charlton Champion hopes that GLL/Better will provide the centre with a fit-for-purpose website in the near future.

Go for a Boxing Day dip at Charlton Lido

Fancy a Christmas dip? Charlton Lido will be open to swimmers looking to get some post-Christmas Day exercise – or just a splash around and some fresh air – this Boxing Day morning. The heated pool will be open 9-11am, and tickets can be booked in advance here (and are cheaper than paying on the door).

The times they are a-changin’: Charlton Lido’s winter timetable announced

Charlton lido outdoor pool
Charlton Lido in the late September sunshine
It’s officially autumn, despite the late burst of September sunshine, and autumn means three things for Charlton Lido swimmers: swimming in the dark on weeknight evenings (try it – I promise you it’s one of the very best things you can do in Charlton on a Monday night); the water temperature being noticeably higher than the air temperature making it easier to get in the pool and harder to get out; and – less positively – a reduction in pool opening hours.

Here’s how it’s looking for Autumn/Winter ’18:Charlton Lido timetable winter 2018

Charlton Lido Winter Pool Timetable October 2018 to March 2019:

Monday: 6.30am-2pm & 4pm-8pm
Tuesday: 6.30am-2pm & 4pm-8pm
Wednesday: Closed
Thursday: Closed
Friday: 6.30am-2pm
Saturday: 9am-5pm
Sunday: 9am-5pm

The popular Swim Doctor drop-in sessions will continue on Monday evenings and Friday mornings, with the current Wednesday morning session moving to Tuesday mornings.

We’re grateful to Friends of Charlton Lido for passing this information on.

Week-round swimming returns to Charlton Lido for the summer

Charlton Lido – not always this quiet in the summer…

Good news for swimmers: Charlton Lido’s summer timetable starts soon:

  • 7 day-a-week pool opening starts again on Tuesday 29th May:
    • Mondays 6.30am – 8pm
    • Tuesday-Friday 7am – 8pm
    • Saturday-Sunday 9am – 5pm.

In other lido news, the cafe will re-open Wednesday 23rd May, opening hours to be announced.

The start of summer opening hours should also mean it’ll be possible to fit in a swim before the Greenwich Book Festival event being held in the lido’s upstairs cafe on June 14th.

As ever, we recommend checking the website for the latest pool opening information.

Books making a splash: Greenwich Book Festival comes to Charlton Lido

Charlton Lido

Greenwich Book Festival is bringing four authors who’ve written about swimming to Charlton Lido for a literary event on June 14th:

Come and meet four authors of swimming books discuss how open-water, pools and their fellow swimmers have inspired them – and often kept their head above the water.

Alexandra Heminsley is the bestselling author of Running Like a Girl and, more recently Leap In: A Woman, Some Waves and the Will to Swim.

Jenny Landreth is the author of Swell: A Waterbiography. Part memoir, part social history, Swell is a joyful hymn to swimming and a celebration of the remarkable swimming suffragettes.

Joe Minihane is the writer of Floating: A Life Regained, about his personal project to reswim Roger Deakins’ classic Waterlog.

Libby Page is the first-time novelist of The Lido, which imagines Brockwell Lido being threatened by developers and a campaign spearheaded by 86-year-old Rosemary to save it.

Compere: Patricia Nicol, GBF director, journalist and Charlton Lido devotee.

This session will be followed by a book signing.

The event will take place in Charlton Lido’s upstairs cafe from 7pm, and tickets are available here. The Charlton Champion hopes the pool will be open for a dip beforehand!

Charlton Lido’s Christmas pool hours announced

Steam rises off the heated pool at Charlton Lido on a snowy December morning

Thanks to Friends of Charlton Lido for flagging up Charlton Lido’s Christmas opening hours on their Twitter feed.

The pool hours are similar to current opening times, though closing earlier on Sundays. The pool (and gym) will be open 9-11am on Boxing Day. You can find the latest opening hours on the timetable page of the lido’s website.

For those thinking of trying the lido in the cold weather for the first time, this writer can’t recommend it highly enough. The water’s at a good temperature for swimming (around 24 degrees), and the poolside staff have been doing a great job of maintaining a friendly welcome on chilly days.
