Find out about the Charlton House ‘secret garden’ this Saturday

Old Pond Garden
Volunteers have been restoring the Old Pond Garden at Charlton House in recent years

Ever wanted to find out more about the Charlton House gardens and the work to restore them? The Charlton Society is hosting a talk about them on Saturday with Kathy Aitken of Charlton & Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society.

Kathy is a keen amateur gardener, developing her own garden over the last 30 years. She joined the local Horticultural Society in 2014, finding it a very friendly group with a wide range of gardening knowledge. Her working life was in accountancy, and she discovered the considerable health benefits of gardening very early on. She is now Vice Chair of the Society and runs the admin side of the volunteer scheme at the walled gardens.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett was published in 1911 and became such a popular book it has never been out of print. The walled gardens attached to Charlton House are 400-year-old gems that have been under-used and neglected in recent years, becoming a truly ‘Secret Garden’ on our doorstep!

The talk will tell you about the history of the gardens and how the local Horticultural Society and the Charlton community are helping the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust to make them beautiful again.

The talk will be followed by refreshments. We will be charging our usual entrance fee which helps towards room hire. This is £2 for members and £3 for visitors and we should be able to accept cash, cheque or contactless payments.

The talk is this Saturday, March 19 at the Charlton Assembly Rooms. It starts at 2.30pm.

Charlton and Woolwich Free Film Festival 2022: Get involved with this year’s event

Last year’s highlights included Dunkirk at St George’s Garrison Church in Woolwich

It’s that time of year again – the organisers of the Charlton and Woolwich Free Film Festival are planning this year’s event. And as always, they need your help to put it on.

This year’s festival runs from September 9 to 17 and will be held at venues across the SE7 and SE18 areas. Past venues have included Charlton House, St Luke’s Church, St George’s Garrison Church in Woolwich and Shrewsbury House in Shooters Hill. Two years ago, we teamed up with the festival to hold a special screening of All the President’s Men at Charlton House.

The team are now thrashing out what will be in this year’s programme – and looking for volunteers to get on board and make it happen.

Want to get involved? There’s a meeting at Charlton House on Thursday March 17 at 7pm – all are welcome. Or you can get in touch with the team via their website.

Mamma Mia! comes to Charlton Assembly Rooms in March – tickets on sale now

Mamma Mia! promo image
You might want to brush up on the film version before seeing the show…

Last year we told you about the new Charlton Village Theatre’s forthcoming production of the Abba musical Mamma Mia! Now the tickets are on sale – and there’s one last chance to join the cast too. GWEN ZAMMIT, the show’s producer, explains all…

We would love you to join Charlton Village Theatre at one of our four performances of Mamma Mia!, which is being held at The Assembly Rooms, The Village, Charlton SE7 on Friday 4 March at 7.45pm, Saturday 5 March at 4pm and 7.45pm and Sunday 6 March at 6pm.

Everyone is welcome! Tickets cost £15 for an adult or £5 for a child, which can be ordered in advance on 020 8856 7373 or you can take your luck by turning up on the day – but there is a good chance we may be sold out.

Mamma Mia! is a spectacular musical written by Catherine Johnson with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus. Our Charlton show is produced by Gwen Zammit, BEM, and the musical director is Richard O’Shea. The cast members are members of our community and have aimed for a professional standard.

We are still looking for dancers, singers and chorus members – the next rehearsal you can turn up for is Friday 21 January at 8pm in The Assembly Rooms.

Charity pub quiz this Wednesday at the Royal Oak

The quiz night takes place at the Royal Oak on Wednesday

There’s another charity pub quiz at the Royal Oak on Charlton Lane this Wednesday, 15 December. Quizmaster PAUL BREEN explains more….

An impromptu pub quiz is taking place at The Royal Oak pub next Wednesday. This is an attempt to raise money for charity and to support an elderly lady whose small dog got attacked by a greyhound in Charlton Park. The quiz organisers are going to divide all funds 50-50 between a greyhound rescue charity and the injured dog’s veterinary bills.

As part of the fundraising venture Charlton Athletic have donated a jersey, signed by the current team, for the raffle that will take place on the quiz night.  A number of other raffle prizes will be available on the night. Tickets for this draw are available in The Royal Oak.

Everyone is welcome on a night that is expected to once again provide great entertainment. The quiz costs five pounds per player with a maximum of five players per team. Last time around, we raised over three hundred pounds for Maryon Park Community Garden and we hope for a similar turnout this time around.

The quiz takes place on Wednesday 15th December from 7.30pm onwards but patrons are asked to turn up as early as possible.

Get ready for Christmas at the Charlton Community Carol Service

St Luke with Holy Trinity, Charlton
A carol service is taking place at St Luke’s Church next Wednesday

The annual Christmas carol service returns to St Luke’s Church next Wednesday evening. All are welcome, says REVD LIZ NEWMAN, the rector of the Benefice of Charlton…

As usual, St Luke’s Church, The Village, will host Charlton Community Carol Service on Wednesday December 15th at 7pm. It’s a simple service of readings that tell the Christmas story, interspersed with carols. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served afterwards! Representatives of a variety of community organisations will read and sing. There will be a chance as well to sing your favourite carols. Everyone is welcome and we encourage everyone to please wear a face mask.

There will also be collections for the Save the Children Afghanistan appeal and Safe Families.

Charlton Neighbourhood Forum: Help shape your local area this Saturday

Charlton station mural
The neighbourhood forum has its annual general meeting on Saturday

It’s the special annual general meeting of the Charlton Neighbourhood Forum this Saturday. The forum is hoping to put together a neighbourhood plan for the SE7 area that must be taken into account when developers apply to build on sites – its chair Clare Loops wrote for us last year about why you should take an interest.

If the group can get a plan together, then this will be a hugely important step for the area – so if you’ve got an interest in the future of the area, it’s worth heading along. Too often, this kind of group gets packed out with well-off homeowners objecting to schemes that will chip away at housing waiting lists, so if you’re someone that feels shut out of these kinds of decisions, now’s the time to go along and have your say, and think about joining its committee.

The event is in the Long Gallery on the first floor of Charlton House on Saturday 27 November at 11am. For more details, see the Charlton Neighbourhood Forum website.
