Charlton House in the evening
Charlton House has been used as a vaccination centre since December

All over-18s in Greenwich borough will be able to get first or second jabs from 2pm to 6pm on Thursday; with the clinic also open from 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm on Friday.

Hundreds of people got their jabs at The Valley last weekend in a mass vaccination event for over-40s, and the stadium will opening its gates once again this Saturday. This time, over-18s from all SE London boroughs will be eligible with Pfizer jabs on offer.

Health chiefs are asking people to book ahead so they can manage demand. Bookings can be made on the Eventbrite website.

The Valley is one of a number of London stadiums to be pressed into service for mass vaccination days, with queues also forming at Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham last weekend.

Greenwich borough residents over 40 can also get jabs from 8am to 2pm daily at Woolwich Late Night Pharmacy on General Gordon Square.

More details of clinics across Greenwich and other SE London boroughs – some are being organised at short notice – are on the NHS SE London website.

Community day in Charlton House’s ‘secret garden’ this Sunday

Charlton House
Volunteers have been restoring the gardens behind Charlton House

Volunteers who have been restoring the gardens behind Charlton House will be showing off their work on Sunday – and a there’s be a lot more happening too. KATHY AITKEN from Charlton & Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society explains…

The Charlton & Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society is planning its annual Plant Sale and Community Day this Sunday May 30th from 11 am. This year we have expanded our event, so it’s not just for plant hunters, it’s going to be a real family and community day too.

Tables will be laid out in the “Long Borders” at the back of the walled gardens, which will all be open to the public, and many of the volunteers will be there to show off their latest revival efforts.

There will be home-baked cakes from the Greenwich & Blackheath WI, colouring and flower activities from the Charlton Toy Library, there will be displays from The Charlton Society, the Friends of Greenwich Park, the Charlton Community Garden (who look after the station and Charlton Park’s orchard) and the Friends of Charlton Park (the park’s meadow). Blackheath Flower Arrangers will be showing off their floral designs.

For children, there will be a Discovery Trail around the gardens, with lots of things to find (perhaps a silkworm cocoon, a Yew Fairy or a Frog Prince..). Adults can walk the trail too, and perhaps spot a red oak or a pomegranate. Children can pot up their own strawberry plant to take home.

Our members have been busy planting and potting up, there will be a great selection of perennials like Salvias, Hostas and Agapanthus as well as veg, herbs and house plants. Funds raised from plant sales will go equally to the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice and the walled gardens revival. It will be cash only and best to bring your own bags.

The Green Goddess pub will be on the patio for refreshments, and the weather forecast is looking up. Come and play in your favourite secret garden!

Green Goddess pop-up beer garden coming to Charlton House from 12 April

Charlton House in the evening
All being well, Charlton House will be open for drinks from the 12th

The team behind plans to turn the Barclays Bank at Blackheath Standard into a bar are hoping to give locals a taste of what they can offer in a pop-up beer garden at Charlton House.

The Green Goddess visits Charlton House will open for business from 12 April when, all being well, coronavirus restrictions are loosened and pub beer gardens can welcome customers.

It’ll offer table service only on the patio with two-hour bookable slots between 2pm and 8pm, with last orders at 7.30pm. For the first week, it will open every day through to Sunday 18 April; then open Thursday to Sunday for the rest of April – opening times for May and beyond are yet to be decided.

“It’s very much a pop-up pub so the times maybe subject to change along the way,” Stephen O’Connor of Common Rioters Brewery told The Charlton Champion.

“We will be serving up cask and keg beer, cider, selected spirits, wine, and low and no-alcohol drinks. In addition we hope to have some pop up food stalls at certain times.”

Get green-fingered at Charlton House’s Old Pond Garden from Tuesday

Old Pond Garden
Old Pond Garden at Charlton House

At Christmas, we featured the volunteer scheme to restore the Old Pond Garden at Charlton House. With lockdown easing, the Charlton and Blackheath Amateur Horticultural Society is ready to restart work. Here’s the latest update….

The Old Pond Garden volunteer scheme will re-open from Tuesday March 9th, all gardening levels are welcome. Sessions will be Tuesdays 1.30-3.30 and Thursdays 10-12, as before lockdown. We are lobbying hard for a Sunday session in the near future.

The garden is looking good, please come along to see progress and pull a weed (or three), and check out the latest planting plans.

We also hope to start dealing with the Long Borders, so we need all the help we can get!

We can always do with donations of primroses (native, yellow) and any snowdrops in the green.

More details and photos are available at cabahs.com/old-pond-garden-project

Join a Christmas treasure hunt for children at Charlton Toy Library

Charlton House
The toy library is based in Charlton House

Got small children to entertain next weekend? Charlton Toy Library, which is based at Charlton House, is putting on a treasure hunt in Charlton Park next Saturday. In their own words…

Charlton Toy Library is putting on a Christmas Treasure Hunt, on Saturday 12 December between 10.30 – 12.30.

There will be two trails for little hunters. One easier one for kids up to 3 years and one advanced one for kids over 3 years. Starting point is at the Charlton Toy Library to collect the treasure map.

The event is free to attend and participants will receive a treat at the end. All social distancing measures and government guidelines are being followed for this event.

It follows a pumpkin hunt held at Halloween, which we’re told was a roaring success. To sign up, visit eventbrite.co.uk.

Can you help plan the future of Charlton House?

Charlton House SE7
Charlton House is managed by Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust. Photo by Neil Clasper.

Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust is planning a series of events in February to help it make decisions about its new masterplan and plans for major investment at Charlton House. The trust, which runs the Jacobean mansion on behalf of Greenwich Council, is applying for funding to improve the building, which has not seen major investment for many years.

Two events are being held – on Thursday 6 February from 1pm to 3.30pm, and Thursday 13 February from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Questionnaires will also be put online so as many people as possible can take part in the consultation.

The trust is also holding focus groups – to get involved in those, email info[a]rght.org.uk for more details.
