Charlton Lido refused premises licence after neighbours’ petition

IMG_2594.JPG

Months of poor communications with members and neighbours caught up with Charlton Lido’s management on Monday when Greenwich Council refused permission for a premises licence which would have enabled the lido to serve alcohol and hold live events.

GLL, which runs the lido, wanted a licence to hold members’ events as well as to hire it out for “book signings, film launches and art exhibitions”.

But neighbours got up a 94-name petition complaining about disturbance from events already held, and claiming that their complaints to GLL had been ignored.

Backed by Kidbrooke with Hornfair councillor Norman Adams, they claimed there had been “no communication” before events were held. Others complained about sleepless nights and even disturbance from the lido’s current operation during the daytime.

A Greenwich Council licensing sub-committee concluded that GLL “displayed an inability to manage the premises while holding events”.

“Whilst the Lido management had significant experience in managing leisure centres it was not felt that the applicant had demonstrated that they would be able to manage licensed events and uphold the licensing objectives. The Sub-Committee were of the opinion that the nature of the venue meant that even a small group of people would cause a disturbance. Whilst a number of conditions had been proposed the Sub Committee were not satisfied based on the evidence given by the applicant that events could be properly controlled,” the council’s decision notice reads.

The setback for the lido follows a string of avoidable problems caused by poor communications with members, including short notice changes to opening times, a “customer forum” that hadn’t been advertised to customers, and last year’s short-lived decision to rename the facility “Royal Greenwich Lido”.

GLL now has three weeks to decide if it wants to appeal against the decision and take the case to a magistrates’ court.

Charlton Lido wants an alcohol licence – but its neighbours aren’t happy…

GLL has applied for a premises licence to allow ‘the Supply of Alcohol (on sales only), provision of live and recorded music (Indoors only) Monday to Sunday from 11:00 hours until 23:00 hours‘ at Charlton Lido, with the application to be heard on October 6th.

An overview of the application can be found here, and details of objections raised are here. The deadline for representations was 16th September.

But a 94-name petition has been submitted objecting to the application, along with 11 individual objections – pointing to some dissatisfaction amongst the lido’s neighbours over a number of issues, principally parking, noise, and the attitude of the lido management towards residents.

Meanwhile, London Fields Lido (also operated by GLL) looks to be maintaining its standard opening hours year-round, while also benefiting from investment in floodlights and underwater lighting to improve evening swimming.

Customer Forum?
There’s a Customer Forum taking place at Charlton Lido on 16th September to discuss the opening hours and other issues, with the centre’s management. We’re told invites have gone out to Lido members by email, and that the event has been advertised in the reception area. This particular member didn’t receive the email, and a number of readers have reported the same, so – if you are a member – it may be worth checking that you haven’t opted out (or been opted out of) email communications from GLL.

If you can’t make the meeting, and would like to have a say, we suggest emailing charltonlido@gll.org with your feedback in advance (and let us know what you think in the comments box below!).

Late opening Wednesdays at Charlton Lido

Good news for Charlton Lido swimmers as GLL announce that the main pool will open until 9.30pm on Wednesday, ‘until further notice’. It’s to be hoped that if this proves popular then late opening will be extended through the week (more publicity may help, though: this particular Better Swim member only found out by checking GLL’s website; an email to members would surely help raise awareness of what is clearly a positive development).

Charlton Lido – South East London’s only heated, outdoor 50m pool – resumes weekday opening  from today. The pool (and ‘sun terrace’ – from which the photo above was taken) has been open on weekends through March, while the new gym facilities opened in early February. The cafe is expected to open around Easter.

Current pool opening hours are:
Monday – Friday: 7am to 6pm
Weekends: 9am to 5pm.

Check GLL’s website for the latest opening hours.

Charlton lido: open weekend and pool re-opening

Charlton Lido, 9 August

Charlton lido’s heated pool will re-open with an Open Weekend, featuring free swimming and a barbecue on the weekend of March 8 and 9. Open Weekend swimming times are 9-5pm, with the barbecue running 12-5pm on the Saturday. The pool will then open during the remaining weekends in March, with ‘full’ opening starting in April.

The pool closed in early November 2013, with GLL citing a lack of members making year-round opening uneconomical. In the meantime the refurbishment of the wider premises – including a new gym, studio and indoor changing rooms has been completed, with the gym opening at the start of this month.

Charlton Lido gym opens – pool to follow ‘for Easter’

The new gym building, replacing the old front entrance

Charlton lido’s gym facilities opened this week, with the pool expected to re-open “around Easter”. The gym and studio facilities are in a new building which has replaced the original entrance; new changing rooms for the pool have been built along the east side, though the outdoor cubicles and showers installed for the original reopening in 2012 are still in place. A cafe will open on the second floor above the gym, with ‘sun terraces’ to each side.

Opening times are currently 6am-10pm Monday to Thursday, 6am-8pm on Friday, and 9am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Check the official website for the latest opening times here.

The headline adult monthly fee seems to be around £54, although GLL have been advertising deals for existing customers of David Lloyd at Kidbrooke.
