A Christmas tree is returning to Charlton House this year
Charlton House’s Christmas tree makes a comeback on Thursday, with a lighting-up ceremony to be held from 4pm.
There’ll also be a Christmas market in the Great Hall from 3.30pm to 6pm, with carols and readings from St Luke’s Church at 5pm. You’ll also be able to nip over the road and climb St Luke’s tower to get a view of the capital after dark.
The event is also the launch of a new cafe inside Charlton House, Frilly’s, which will offer “a seasonal snack menu including mince pies, mulled wine, hot chocolate, and sausage rolls”.
The Maryon Park Community Garden has been hit by the pandemic
The Royal Oak on Charlton Lane is holding a pub quiz on Wednesday 24 November to raise funds for the Maryon Park Community Garden. Quizmaster PAUL BREEN explains more…
The Maryon Park Community Garden is a food growing space in a reclaimed area of the park which had previously been neglected and abandoned. Thanks to a group of dedicated local volunteers, steered largely by community stalwarts Tim and Edna Anderson, the food growing space has been radically transformed in the past decade. It is now a thriving social space that brings together people from all parts of our very diverse community. Even through Covid, it has served as a source of social sustenance for members.
Unfortunately, with lockdowns and so on, the garden has been unable to host many open days or public events in recent times. Therefore, this is a very worthy cause and support is very much appreciated. Incidentally, this is also the first pub quiz in The Royal Oak since it came under management earlier this year. New owner Kevin Latta has been very keen to participate actively in the life of the community and is looking forward to welcoming regulars and visitors alike on Wednesday 24th.
The quiz kicks off at 7.30pm with up to five members in each team, at a cost of £5 per player. There is also food available in the pub and people are welcome to come as early as possible. Indeed, in these times, that is probably advisable as every effort will be made to make the venue Covid safe. Quiz attendees are advised to bring masks for use when outside of their seated areas.
And as a taster, what famous 1960s film was shot in Maryon Park? So easy not even any need to answer here! Expect the difficulty of questions to be blown up significantly.
The 17th-century building was traditionally a landmark for ships on the Thames – it still has the right to fly the Royal Ensign on two days a year in recognition of its former role.
It’s not the easiest of climbs for sufferers of vertigo, but we’re assured the views from the top are spectacular. And the church itself is worth a look if you’ve never been inside.
The church and tower will be open from noon to 4pm this Sunday, 17 October.
On Monday evening, the church is also hosting an information evening on for Safe Families, a charity working locally to provide support to isolated families.

The Charlton Society AGM will include a talk on Woolwich
The Charlton Society, the local amenity society for the area, is having its annual general meeting on Saturday, with both members and non-members welcome to come along.
There’s a lot to discuss in Charlton right now, but the society has opted to have a talk about Woolwich in the second part of its AGM.
It says…
The layout of the room will be slightly different to allow for social distancing. Wearing masks is optional but we ask that you use the hand sanitiser provided.
We will ask you to sign in but, for this special meeting, we will not charge for refreshments. We will also be accepting annual subscriptions and this year should be able to offer contactless payment, although you might like to bring cash with you in case there is a technical glitch!
The Meeting will take place in two sections. The first section will deal with the business of the Annual General Meeting (at which non-members will not be able to vote) and the second part will be a talk presented by David Gardner who will outline the “Challenges Facing Woolwich”. As ward councillor for Woolwich Common David is well placed to bring us up to date with the multiple changes facing the Town and district.
The event begins at 2.30pm on Saturday in the Grand Salon at Charlton House.
More than 300 people ran and walked around Charlton Park this morning
Parkrun made its debut in Charlton Park this morning – with 331 people running or walking for five kilometres around the open space.
Runners taking part in tomorrow’s London Marathon helped lift numbers for the inaugural event, with Charlton now the closest run to the start line at Greenwich Park.

But 35 people who had never taken part in a parkrun before also joined in for the first time, along with regulars from other nearby events.
Parkrun will now take place every Saturday – all abilities are welcome, just sign up and print off a barcode, and be by the table tennis tables at 9am. Today’s finish times ranged from 16 minutes to 57 minutes.

We need, please:
3 older ladies to act and sing
3 older men to act and sing
Dancers/Singers 18 and over
3 younger ladies to act and sing
3 younger men to act and sing
Plus we also need to cover a few minor parts as well.
Candidates can sing an Abba song featured in the script and will be accompanied by our Musical Director.
We are a friendly bunch, so I am hoping whoever joins us will have a good time. Rehearsal times maybe a Friday, Monday or Tuesday evening or a Sunday pm. Depending on the availability of the hall and performers. The actual performances are: Friday 26th to Sunday 28th November 2021.
A compulsory dress rehearsal on Sunday, 21st November. Not everyone will need to attend all the rehearsals to start with as we will rehearse in sections.
