Coronavirus in Charlton: Please tell us what you are doing to help your neighbours

The spread of the coronavirus means this is starting to become a worrying time for everybody. We want to know what you are doing to help your neighbours.

We know there are people preparing to help their neighbours – setting up informal groups to pick up essentials and and run errands.

Nearly half of over-75s aren’t online at all. Even a third of 65 to 74-year-olds do not use the internet, according to Ofcom. So local networks have a big role to play.

You may be setting something up already – maybe on Facebook or NextDoor. But not all of your neighbours will be on those groups – especially as social media’s not a fun place to be at present. You could be missing out on people who could help out.

So if you know of or are setting up a group in Charlton, or that covers Charlton, please leave a comment below with contact details, and they’ll be added to this story. Or feel free to email us. Hopefully we can get you some more volunteers.

Groups/ people trying to co-ordinate volunteers:

If you’re able to do something as an individual, these Viral Kindness postcards from Becky Wass could be a good way to start.

If you can get a group going, please let us know and we’ll spread the word. Thank you.

The Charlton Parkside Community Hub has had offers from members to order groceries, do dog walking etc. It’s easy for members to post requests – but it also needs those in need of any sort of help to not feel that they being a nuisance or too proud / independent to ask!

I have posted a note through doors to 30 neighbours at the top of Woodhill today, to see if they want to set up a WhatsApp group. Also offered alternative contact by landline and good ole fashioned notes through letter boxes. Trying to set up a collective support group for shopping
medication etc for those who need it. We are a woolwich postcode on the borders of Charlton:-)

We on Eversley Road have set up a network which includes the whole street, with anyone that can help others give their details to several of their close neighbours each including phone number for shopping help, post help or just a friendly chat over the phone. Slips were downloaded from the net and distributed by one of our superstar neighbours for filling out by the helpers who then deliver to their close neighbours which will help anyone in need. Simple and effective.

Hi Dan. This seems a great idea, but hasn’t reached my part of Eversley Road yet. Its not clear whether you are signing up potential helpers or those that might need help. Is there a way of getting in touch so more can sign up ?

Hi all, we are setting up a network of helpers as part of the Buy Nothing Blackheath/Chartlon/Lewisham group – link to join the group is here https://www.facebook.com/groups/buynothingblackheath/

NB this is a hyper-local gifting group and as such has to cover quite a small and defined area, so does not cover all of Charlton, you can check the area here:

I have concerns that there may be fraudsters who might take advantage of the situation and of vulnerable people with all kinds of scams, so groups need to ensure they have a system that enables those needing the support can be assured that only genuine volunteers would be in touch with them.
