While work is now taking place to bring a large Sainsbury’s store to Woolwich Road, there’s a lot less work taking place on bringing a smaller Sainsbury’s to Charlton Church Lane, where an extension is needed before the chain can move in.
Yet this graffiti’s appeared recently. While a small supermarket will bring a bit of life to the parade by Charlton station, clearly not everyone’s happy to see Sainsbury’s arrive.

Wonder if the was sprayed here by the monopoly of minimarts around the cafe, which I’d be glad to see reduce to a single shop a free up space. Sainsburys would offer more standard products at reasonable prices.
Wouldn’t bank on it, the “local” formats tend to charge higher prices. And while I wouldn’t say the same for all those shops, I’d hate to see FA Food & Wine go – they’re very friendly in there and never seem to take a day off.
Anything would be an improvement on what’s there now? While those shops on the parade probably serve the immediate community well it is rather shabby on the whole and could certainly do with a shake up!
I would just like to say that the shops all along Charlton Church Lane need to have a facelift. Perhaps they should get together to get this done. Also, having the pavement full of rubbish on a Monday morning in front of the shops by Conran estates up to the hair dressing salon is disgusting and the council needs to provide the local tenants with proper disposal solutions. The other day I had to walk in the street to walk down to the station. I will be posting the pictures of this incident shortly.
I agree that all the shopkeepers are friendly however if there is no chance of a facelift to all the shops then I also agree that having one or two shops fit for purpose would improve the image.

Darryl is quite right about ‘Locals’. They’re often substantially more expensive than their bigger brothers. I use FA as well, in fact I’ve just come from there with Kingsmill bread for a quid and two litres of milk for 1.15. The fact that the shops ‘serve the immediate community well’ should be applauded rather than looked down on!
I will use the Sainsbury’s I’m sure, but for ’emergency’ buys.
I’m for the ‘locals’. They offer a contribution to shopping that is different from the ‘big five’ and it’s the lack of high street stores that make Charlton what it is and an interesting place to live in. The big stores are still in easy reach so be carefull what you wish for … do you remember Greenwich before Weatherspoons, Superdrug and Pizza Express arrived? The ‘locals’ don’t look slick and are more expensive because they don’t have the backing of a national/international chain to subsidise prices and give them a homongenised plastic exterior. Do we really want to promote and encourage multinationals over local enterprise? They are our local businesses and our local families and we should stick up for them. (PS it was not me that did the spraying….)
We all have to be thankful that the location was not snapped up by a Tesco Express which really would have been a blight for Charlton.
Does anyone have any updates on the progress of this Sainsburys; the original plan was a launch date of Jut 4th – with ground not even been broken yet, I assume that the opening is many months away.
Of the other four shops, selling exactly the same product lines, three are owned by the same person, I find them generally dirty, poorly stocked and shabby but the staff are extremely polite. Sainsbury would be wise to try and recruit some of these people.
For me personally, I am looking forward to the opening of the ne store and welcome this as an important addition to Charlton

Charlton people like a traditional area, with traditional shops, green places, nice air and not became a trendy/rubish place.
Well then the local shops need to polish up their image in order to be more competitive with the big retailers.
Firstly they are dirty and have refused to remotely modernise in the six years I have lived in SE7. And there are a bizarre selection of unknown brands and Polish foods that I have no interest in buying, thus the need for something like Sainsbury’s who stock food that I can actually eat for dinner everyday.
They are classed as ‘convenience’ stores too, which entails selling a broad range of fresh and frozen produce, not poor quality food that has been hanging around in the chillers for months and months – the demand is there, the Charlton community will pay the prices for fresh meats, an array of dairy and fresh juices etc. The shops just refuse to stock them on the basis that ‘they won’t sell?!?!?!’
Which is why they could all be streamlined into one or two small shops, like what others have said in this thread.
THREE shops on the same road called ‘Charlon Food & Wine’ and two identical junk food shops? A little excessive, I think we can all agree.
