Developments at Maryon Wilson Animal Park?

The ‘unofficial’ Twitter feed of the Friends Of Maryon Wilson Park brought news this week of new arrivals in the park:

As well as signs that Maryon Wilson Animal Park Ltd (the company set up in 2012 to run the animal park facilitiesnot to be confused with the Friends of Maryon Wilson Park group) – has secured some sponsorship:

There’s nothing on the official website about Durkan’s involvement yet, but there is an announcement about quarterly open meetings, starting July 5th:

Due to a high amount of interest, the Board at Maryon Wilson Animal Park will now be running quarterly open meetings on a Saturday morning. These meetings will be open to all members of the public to keep up to speed with the activities of the Board and the animal park.

The first of these meetings will be held on Saturday 5th July from 10:30am – 12pm at Charlton Park RDA. There will be an introduction to the current Board members, a catch-up on the past three months at the park and a Q&A session. Light refreshments will also be available.

If you are interested in the park, if it holds a special place in your heart, or if you would like to know more about how you can help, then we would love to meet you!

Date: Saturday 5th July
Time: 10:30am – 12pm
Location: Charlton Park RDA Hut, Charlton Park

If you’re able to attend the meeting, some interesting questions to ask the Board might include:

  • Who is on the Board now?  What are their positions and experience? Will there be public announcements for future appointments to the Board?
  • What are the terms of the sponsorship deal with Durkan?
  • Will future events be better promoted than the Easter Egg Hunt (which appeared on the ‘official’ Twitter feed the day before the event).

If you do go along, let us know what you learnt.

Hmm, perhaps I’m over-interpreting this post but I seem to detect a hint of animosity towards the Maryon Wilson Animal Park board in this post. As far as I’m aware this is a volunteer board, support by other volunteers doing their best to keep the animal park open that would otherwise have closed when the council announced plans to withdraw funding. They might or might not have the perfect experience and qualifications but, personally, I’m glad that someone is prepared to give up their time to keep the animal park open.

So yes you could quiz the board on their experience and imperfect promotion of events, or you could go along to find out more and offer help to make future events better. Although I would say that having taken children to both the Easter egg hunt and the council arranged spring sheep shearing day the children’s verdict was that the animal park chaps already have the edge.

I get a sense that those suggesting the questions to be asked at the July meeting have no wish to see the Board of Trustees succeed . From my own experience, having worked with them for the last two years they have the ideas, knowledge and experience to develop a thriving Animal Park for the benefit of young and old. I have every confidence that they will attract a wider community interest in the months ahead. Why not get involved.

Hi – no animosity to the board from this site; we’re big fans of the animal park (indeed, this site was originally set up in response to the news that the animal farm was likely to lose funding – http://charltonchampion.co.uk/2010/12/07/council-cuts-maryon-wilson-animals-under-threat/). It has been noted, though, that there’ve been a number of changes to the board without much publicity (that we’ve seen – happy to put right on this), and it’d be good to know more about this.

Regarding the sponsorship, this seems like a good news story – so why not shout about it?
